Commentary
Cattle numbers increased again this fortnight at Ballarat with 681 penned. Quality was mixed, a good run of heavy cows were presented in excellent condition, alongside a small offering of well bred young cattle and a large portion of plainer secondary types across all weights and grades. All regular buyers were present in a market that bounced either side of firm throughout the sale. Young cattle sold firm to 10c dearer in places for the better types, while plainer lots ended 5c either side of firm. Grown steers gained 10c, and heifers improved to 12c, although feeder steers and heifers slipped 10c/kg. Heavy cows sold firm to 5c softer, while lighter framed and lighter weight cows gained 10c in places and Dairy cows eased 15c/kg. Heavy bulls recorded the strongest result, selling up to 40c dearer and reaching 505c/kg.
Young steers and heifers sold to the trade from 430c to 498c, restocker and feeders made from 442c to 632c for the better quality and plainer lots made from 282c to 464c/kg. Heavy bullocks sold to 444c to 460c, grown steers to the trade sold from 450c to 490c and feeders made from 450c to 472c/kg. Grown heifers made 394c to 478c to the trade and feeder and restocker types sold from 280c to 465c/kg.
Heavy cows sold to the trade from 370c to 448c/kg. Medium and light weight cows sold from 350c to 390c, while feeder and restocker types made 128c to 388c/kg. Heavy bulls sold from 430c to 505c, and lighter and younger bulls made from 380c to 450c/kg.
