Total Yarding: 1,110

Commentary

Agents yarded 1110 head at Mortlake this week marking a slight increase on last week’s offering. Overall the quality remained similar across most categories. There was some supplementary-fed cattle particularly in the trade weight classes and a portion of the lighter cattle displayed improved quality. However there was a noticeable tail of lighter conditioned dairy and crossbred cattle.
The bullock yarding showed a reduction in weight with a greater presence of manufacturing types. Approximately 70% of the cow offering comprised dairy breeds with a slight increase in heavy weight beef cows. Not all regular buyers were in attendance for the yarding which included 91 bullocks, 469 trade cattle, 484 cows and 66 grown bulls.

The market remained generally firm for bullocks and trade cattle with continued strong demand for well bred feeder steers and heifers. Manufacturing cattle also held firm. Grown heifers eased 10 to 20 c/kg, and most beef cows and dairy breeds experienced a drop of up to 20c/kg in places. In contrast, cows returning to the paddock sold at very strong rates. Heavy grown bulls remained firm for the better types.

Bullocks sold to a top of 475c/kg. Better quality trade cattle ranged from 450c to 528c/kg. Heavy beef cows made between 390c and 432c/kg while medium weight cows sold from 330c to 375c/kg. Dairy cows particularly those with better coverage ranged from 350c to 396c/kg. Cows returning to the paddock reached a top of 452c/kg. Manufacturing steers sold to 436c/kg. Grown heifers ranged from 420c to 462c/kg while grown steers reached a top of 500c/kg. Grown bulls sold up to 480c/kg.
