Commentary

Lamb numbers fell and there were just under 10,000 new season lambs. The quality was mixed with more trade and heavy lambs and good runs of stores but there were not as many restockers in the market, especially after the heavier weights. There was a small run of Merino lambs and hoggets and a few more shorn new season stores. The market sold to mixed trends.

Light new season store lambs were $6 dearer and ranged from $148 to $190/head. Heavier store lambs 18kg to 22kg were cheaper with less competition from restockers and sold to $196/head Trade new season lambs averaged firm to $2 easier with trade buyers picking up the drier lambs that the restockers were purchasing last week. Prices ranged from $212 to $257/head. The fresher lambs were 1080c while the drier end were 1000c to 1050c/kg. Heavy lambs were $3 dearer selling from $250 to $296 and extra heavy lambs reached $344/head.

Shore trade weights sold from $189 to $240/head or 1050 to 1070c/kg and extra heavy old lambs topped at $370/head. Merino trade lambs were firm ranging from $168 to $209/head. The best priced hogget reached $309/head.

Mutton numbers lifted and the quality was good with plenty of medium and heavy mutton offered. Prices were dearer, most notable in the larger runs. Heavy crossbred ewes sold from $236 to $318 and heavy Merinos reached $255/head. Heavy Merino wethers topped at $290/head. Most ranged from 750c to 830c but there was isolated sale up to 900c/kg on the bigger runs.
