Commentary
Similar numbers of 1097 head, and more with top-end fed cattle appearing as the market gains momentum. It was a dearer sale across nearly all categories, agents reporting some noticeable price step-ups for well-bred lighter calves either side of 300kg liveweight amid more wet weather and stronger restocking interest including some northern enquiry. The quote from selling agents was 10c to 20c/kg dearer for quality trade weighted cattle, while cows gained 10c to 12c/kg.
There was some exceptional quality in the lead of the trade steers and heifers off grain, and rates moved up to between 515c to 545c/kg. Well bred lighter weight store and feeder calves topped the sale at up to 570c/kg, with any lines of Angus selling to strong demand. The second draft of trade cattle generally 470c to 510c/kg. Saleyard data shows the average price for steers weighing between 330kg to 550kg was 510c/kg across 211 head sold. The average price for the main run of heifers in the 300kg to 480kg weight range was 471c/kg. There was still some secondary cattle priced between 300c to 400c/kg.
The cow market was consistently dearer and all grades benefited including dairy breeds. Angus cows supplemented off grain sold to 438c/kg. Saleyard data shows 261 cows weighing over 520kg liveweight averaged 395c/kg or $2523 per head, with the top heavy beef cows making upwards of $3500. Only a limited run of grown and manufacturing steers were presented with most sales from 385c to 485c/kg depending on breed and finish.
