Middle East Conflict: Firm Lamb Markets Amid Elevated Trade Uncertainty
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is introducing heightened uncertainty into Western Australian and national livestock markets, particularly around live sheep exports and air freight lamb programs.
Operationally, the impact is already evident. A live export vessel remains anchored off Fremantle, with sheep assembled in feedlots awaiting shipment. While exports remain legally permitted, vessels still require sailing permissions, export documentation and adequate insurance coverage. In a conflict environment, insurers reassess exposure, maritime authorities tighten approvals, and operators must consider crew safety and route disruption ,creating genuine uncertainty around departure timing.
Air freight lamb programs face similar pressures, with restricted airspace and rising insurance costs influencing logistics and margins.
Importantly, this is not a collapse in demand. Middle Eastern customers continue to require protein — both live sheep and chilled lamb. With Ramadan underway and Eid approaching in the latter half of March, this is traditionally a period of elevated consumption, adding timing pressure to an already complex situation.
Domestically, markets remain resilient. Over the past 10 days, lamb values in WA and nationally have improved approximately 20–25¢/kg liveweight. Mutton has edged higher, and online auction clearance rates have strengthened to around 95%, reflecting solid buyer participation.
The key variable is duration. Short-term disruption may create temporary volatility, but extended instability through this high-demand window could influence freight economics and procurement behaviour more materially.
The question remains whether current pricing fully reflects that risk.
In this environment, forward risk management becomes increasingly relevant. Structured tools providing guaranteed minimum pricing for feeder and trade lambs into spring and summer allow producers to secure downside protection while retaining upside participation.
