Commentary

Number increased to 2,650 at Mortlake for the crossbred sale. The offering consisted of mostly crossbred steers and heifers, with a small yarding of pure bred cattle and a larger offering of cow and calf units. The usual buying group attended with competition coming primarily from local restockers, specialist feeders and an extra buyer from northern Victoria. The market opened a bit subdued over the heavy grown steers but gained some momentum on the F1 Angus/Friesian cross steers and heifers. Angus steers sold 20c to 30c softer, with the exception of two pens of weaner steers selling to 600c/kg. The F1 Angus/Friesian cross portion sold firm in places, however ended 10c to 15c/kg cheaper. Grown and weaner Angus heifers sold to 10c softer, while the F1 Angus/Friesian cross heifers again sold firm with some cheaper sales throughout. Please note that these prices are compared to the comparison of the crossbred sale four weeks ago.

Grown Angus steers sold from 482c to 550c, while the younger Angus steers made from 488c to 570c and the lighter weights under 280kg sold from 498c to 600c/kg. The heavy F1 Angus/Friesian steers gained plenty of interest from feeders selling from 475c to 520c for the older steers, and the younger and light weights made from 392c to 550c/kg.

Grown and yearling Angus heifers made from 460c to 502c, while the weaner heifers sold from 410c to 522c/kg. The grown and yearling F1 Angus/Friesian cross heifers sold from 410c to 498c, while the younger and light weight heifers were limited and sold from 392c to 485c/kg.

PTIC females sold from $1900 to $2,800/head. Agents penned a line of cows with a CAF and rejoined, the Speckle Park Cow and Calf units making $2,500 to $3000 and the Angus cow and calf units made $2,300 and $4,150 per/unit. Angus and Angus cross cow and calf units made from $2,250 to $3100 and the coloured bred Cow and Calf units sold from $1,700 to $2,400/head.
