Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets strengthened sharply across the eastern states, with rain-reduced yardings and aggressive feeder and restocker competition driving widespread price gains across most categories.

The trends appear to be:

  • Lower supply levels, particularly in NSW and WA following rainfall and previous large weaner sales
  • Strong buyer competition, especially from feedlots, restockers, and processors
  • Young cattle and feeder lines significantly dearer across most selling centres
  • Cow markets stronger, with heavy cows lifting sharply in several markets
  • Quality feeder cattle highly sought after, supporting broad market gains
  • Market confidence improving, particularly in rainfall-affected regions

East Coast (NSW, VIC)
Overall much stronger market, with reduced numbers and strong competition driving significant price rises across most categories

NSW results were particularly strong:

  • Forbes saw most categories lift, led by yearling steers, heifers, and cows gaining up to 30c/kg
  • Tamworth recorded gains of 15c to 40c/kg across young cattle, grown stock, and cows in a smaller yarding
  • Wagga delivered one of its strongest sales in years, with fierce feedlot and restocker demand pushing prices sharply higher across all classes

VIC (Mortlake) saw:

  • Stronger prices across most categories despite mixed quality
  • Trade cattle, bullocks, and cows lifting by up to 30c/kg
  • Strong feeder and restocker competition underpinning the market

Summary: Rain-reduced supply and strong feeder confidence continue to drive a very strong eastern cattle market, with widespread gains across young cattle, feeders, and cows

Western Australia
Muchea (857 head) saw:

  • Smaller mixed-quality yarding following the previous weaner sale
  • Weaner prices only slightly easier
  • Trade cattle, cows, and heavy bulls remaining firm

Summary: WA cattle markets remained relatively steady, with firm demand for trade and export stock offsetting softer trends in some weaner categories following recent large sales
