Commentary
Agents penned 21,400,around 2,000 less than a week ago. Quality varied, heavy export lambs off feed presented in excellent condition, the trade weights off shears and feed were in exceptional condition. However there was a noticeable tail in the mix across the yarding lacking weight and shape along with a large portion of plainer lots. All the usual buying group were on the rail, not all were active in a market that opened very strong over the store and light trade categories, however became subdued at the start of the heavy export lambs and remained erratic throughout the remainder of the sale. Trade weight lambs in short skins gained the most interest and sold firm to dearer in places. Light store lambs sold either side of firm, light and medium trade slipped $10, heavy trade was back $10 to $15/head. Heavy export lambs sold to a top of $390, selling $15 to $20 softer.
Light store lambs sold from $160 to $225, lambs to feed on made $205 to $270/head. Light and medium trade made from $217 to $273 and heavy trade sold from $254 to $292/head, to average 1070c to 1170c/kg cwt. Hoggets sold from $160 to $289 for the crossbreds and Merino’s made from $160 to $264/head.
Mutton numbers slipped to 5,300 of mix quality, the market open strong and remained upbeat throughout the sale. Merino wethers were limited and made from $200 to $248/head. Light Merino ewes made from $113 to $157 and the heavier weights sold from $162 to $268/head. Light weight crossbred mutton made from $123 to $190, while the heavier weights sold from $195 to $298/head. Most mutton averaged 800c to 840c/kg, while extra heavy mutton averaged around 750c/kg cwt.
