Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets were generally firm to dearer, with strong restocker and feeder demand supporting young cattle across NSW and Victoria, while cow markets were mixed and Western Australia recorded softer results in some young stock categories.

The trends appear to be:

  • Young cattle and feeder stock generally sold dearer
  • Restocker demand remained strong across eastern markets
  • Feeder yearlings continued to attract solid competition
  • Cow markets were mixed, with some centres improving and others easing slightly
  • Quality cattle remained well supported
  • Western Australia was softer in younger cattle categories but firm in cows and bulls

East Coast (NSW, VIC)

Overall firm to dearer market, driven by strong competition for feeder and restocker cattle.

NSW results were positive:

  • Tamworth (2,272 head) saw feeder and restocker yearlings sell significantly dearer, while cows and export cattle eased slightly
  • Forbes (735 head) recorded a firm to slightly dearer market, with strong gains for restocker heifers and improved cow prices
  • Wagga (6,140 head) saw young cattle lift on strong feedlot and restocker competition, while heavy cows eased marginally

VIC (Mortlake) stood out:

  • Mortlake (2,700 head) recorded widespread gains of 20–40c/kg
  • Feeder and restocker demand lifted most categories
  • Cows held firm, while heavy bulls eased slightly

Summary: Strong competition for feeder and restocker cattle continued to underpin eastern cattle markets, resulting in dearer young cattle and firm overall conditions, although cow prices remained mixed across regions.

Western Australia

Muchea (679 head) saw:

  • Young steers and heifers ease 10–15c/kg
  • Cow prices remain firm
  • Young bulls lift 20–25c/kg on stronger demand

Summary: A mixed market, with softer young cattle offset by firm cow prices and stronger bull values.
