Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets showed generally firmer trends nationally, with reduced supply in several eastern centres and stronger buyer competition supporting widespread price gains across feeder, trade, and cow categories.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply lower overall, despite increased numbers in some centres
  • Buyer competition stronger, particularly from feeders and restockers
  • Feeder cattle and quality young stock attracting solid demand
  • Cow markets improved significantly in several sales
  • Quality cattle continuing to command premiums
  • Market conditions generally firm to dearer across most categories

 

East Coast (NSW, VIC)

Firm to stronger market overall, with widespread price gains driven by improved competition and reduced yardings

NSW results were notably stronger:

  • Forbes (1,808 head) saw:
    • Reduced numbers and good-quality cattle
    • Stronger competition across most categories
    • Feeder heifers and cows recording the largest gains
    • Overall firm to dearer market conditions
  • Tamworth (3,958 head) saw:
    • Smaller yarding dominated by cows
    • Prices lifting across most categories
    • Feeder cattle and cows significantly dearer
    • Strong buyer activity supporting the market
  • Wagga (4,565 head) saw:
    • Increased yarding with stronger buyer competition
    • Light cattle, feeder heifers and cows selling dearer
    • Feedlots and restockers actively competing for quality stock
    • Firm market conditions across most categories

VIC results were also stronger:

  • Mortlake (1,160 head) saw:
    • Improved quality supporting stronger prices
    • Trade cattle and bullocks lifting sharply
    • Beef cows also selling dearer
    • Broad-based gains across most categories

Summary: Eastern states cattle markets trended firmer, with stronger buyer competition and quality offerings driving widespread gains, particularly in feeder cattle and cows.

 

Western Australia

  • Muchea (846 head) saw:

    • Increased yarding and active buyer competition
    • Strong gains in weaners and pastoral calves
    • Most categories selling dearer
    • Strong support for quality young cattle

Summary: A firmer WA market, with stronger demand lifting prices across most categories, particularly young cattle and weaners.
