Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets were mostly firm to dearer across Australia, with feeder demand continuing to underpin the market, while cow and heavy cattle results remained mixed between centres.

The trends appear to be:

  • Feeder cattle, yearlings and weaners continued to attract strong competition
  • Prime cattle generally remained firm
  • Cow markets were mixed, with gains in some centres and easing in others
  • Feedlot demand remained a key market driver
  • Heavy cows and bulls eased in several markets despite stronger demand for younger cattle

Queensland

  • Sarina – Market reports from SCA and Elders were available.
  • Charters Towers (1,930 head) – A smaller but good-quality store yarding met a softer market due to reduced buyer attendance, with stock drawn from across North Queensland.

Summary: Queensland’s market was softer overall, particularly across northern store markets where fewer buyers reduced competition despite good-quality offerings.

New South Wales.

  • Tamworth (1,040 head) – Reduced numbers and stronger buyer demand lifted yearling and weaner cattle prices, while prime cattle remained firm and heavy cows improved. An additional market report was available from RLX.
  • Forbes (1,231 head) – Higher yardings and strong buyer competition resulted in a dearer market, with yearling cattle recording significant gains and cows improving slightly.
  • Wagga (4,100 head) – Mixed quality and stronger feedlot demand supported feeder cattle prices, while lighter steers and cows eased amid softer restocker and processor competition. Additional market reports were available from AWN, RLA and Elders.
  • Yass – An RLX market report was available.

Summary: NSW delivered a generally firm to dearer market, with feeder and yearling cattle well supported by buyers, although lighter cattle and cows were more variable in Wagga.

Victoria

  • Mortlake (1,589 head) – Reduced yardings and strong feeder demand lifted most cattle prices, while heavy cows and bulls eased slightly.
  • Bairnsdale – A BW market report was available.

Summary: Victoria remained firm, with strong feeder competition supporting most categories despite some easing in heavy processing cattle.

Western Australia

  • Muchea (1,542 head) – Higher yardings and stronger demand lifted most cattle prices, particularly weaner calves, while heavy cows and bulls eased. An additional market report was available from Nutrien.

Summary: WA recorded another solid market, with demand for younger cattle outweighing softer trends in heavy export stock.

National Summary

Feeder cattle, yearlings and weaners remained the strongest-performing categories nationally, supported by active feedlot competition. Prime cattle generally held firm, while cow and heavy cattle markets continued to vary depending on quality and buyer demand.
