Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep and lamb markets trended firm to sharply dearer across key eastern states, with tighter supply, widespread rainfall, and strong processor competition driving significant price gains for trade, heavy lambs, and mutton.

The trends appear to be:

  • Lower to mixed supply, with reduced yardings in several major centres due to rain disruptions
  • Strong processor and feeder demand supporting most lamb and sheep categories
  • Trade and heavy lambs generally dearer, with quality grain-fed and export lambs attracting strong competition
  • Mutton markets stronger overall, particularly for heavy sheep and ewes
  • Quality continuing to influence results, with well-finished lambs attracting premium prices
  • National throughput lifted week-to-date despite mixed daily yarding movements

East Coast (NSW, VIC)
Markets were broadly stronger, driven by rain-affected supply and aggressive buyer competition for quality lambs and sheep

NSW saw:

  • Wagga record strong gains across trade, export, and heavy lambs, while mutton also sold significantly dearer amid reduced supply
  • Griffith resume sales with widespread price rises across all categories, supported by tight national supply and rainfall confidence
  • Forbes post a sharply dearer market with strong competition lifting all lamb weight categories
  • Corowa achieve significant gains for heavy lambs and ewes in a near-record yarding
  • Dubbo report $5–$10/head gains across most lamb categories with strong feeder and processor demand
  • Yass and Carcoar both record firm to dearer trends, supported by strong feeder and processor competition

Victoria experienced mixed supply but firm demand:

  • Ballarat and Horsham both recorded dearer trends across most lamb and mutton categories
  • Hamilton maintained strong demand despite lower lamb numbers and higher sheep supply
  • Bendigo reported larger lamb yardings with continued processor competition supporting prices

South Australia

Markets remained firm to dearer overall despite mixed quality offerings

  • Naracoorte saw strong gains of $10–$20/head across trade, export, and mutton categories
  • Dublin reported firm to slightly dearer trends with strong competition across heavy and export lambs

Western Australia

WA sheep markets remained generally firm to stronger despite fluctuating quality

  • Katanning recorded strong demand for prime sheep and lambs, with heavy categories generally dearer
  • Muchea saw lamb prices rise $10–$15/head on strong processor, feedlot, and restocker demand

Tasmania

  • Powranna produced mixed results, with prime lambs firm, mutton slightly dearer, and lighter store lambs easing due to reduced quality

Summary:  Sheep and lamb markets remain strongly supported by rain-driven confidence, tighter supplies, and intense processor demand, with heavy lambs and mutton leading gains while quality continues to underpin premiums across all major selling centres.
