Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets showed mixed trends nationally, with strong demand for quality stock and feeders supporting prices in some centres, while restocker cattle and secondary lines came under pressure despite increased post-Easter supply. The trends appear to be:

  • Supply increased following Easter, with larger yardings across most regions
  • Strong demand for quality cattle, particularly feeder steers and well-finished stock
  • Restocker cattle under pressure in several centres despite good competition
  • Cows mixed, with some centres dearer while others eased
  • Market remains variable, with quality and buyer competition driving outcomes

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

  • Mixed market overall, with clear divergence between quality cattle and secondary lines
  • QLD results showed solid demand:
    • Sarina (890 head) saw strong competition, with firm weaner steers and solid cow and bull prices
    • Moreton (637 head) recorded strong demand for feeder and restocker steers, while heavy cows eased slightly
    • Mareeba (1,442 head) saw strong competition lift quality steers and heifers, while plainer cattle eased
  • NSW results were mixed:
    • Forbes (2,254 head) saw firm to slightly easier trends, particularly for feeder steers and cows
    • Tamworth (7,553 head) recorded dearer feeder steers and cows, but significantly cheaper restocker cattle in a record yarding
    • Wagga (3,700 head) saw mixed trends, with weaker restocker and feedlot demand, while quality trade and heavy cattle held firm to slightly dearer
  • VIC (Mortlake) saw:
    • Feeder cattle dearer in a larger yarding
    • Cows cheaper, with most other categories holding firm

Summary: Strong demand for quality and feeder cattle is supporting parts of the market, while restocker and secondary cattle remain under pressure, particularly with increased supply

Western Australia

  • Muchea (855 head) saw:
    • Firm yearling prices in a weaner-dominated yarding
    • Gains of around 10c/kg for cows, trade cattle and heavy bulls

Summary: Firm to slightly stronger market, supported by steady demand across most categories
