Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets continued to strengthen across eastern Australia, with widespread rainfall boosting confidence and driving strong competition from feeders, restockers and backgrounders. Quality store cattle attracted aggressive bidding, resulting in significant price gains across most categories.

The trends appear to be:

  • Strong restocker and feeder demand underpinning the market
  • Widespread rainfall improving buyer confidence
  • Weaner and yearling cattle recording substantial price increases
  • Feedlot demand remaining a key driver for quality young cattle
  • Strong competition across most store categories
  • Quality cattle continuing to command premiums

East Coast (NSW, VIC)

Overall strong to sharply dearer market, driven by improved seasonal conditions and active feeder and restocker competition.

NSW results were particularly strong:

  • Carcoar Store Sale (4,148 head) saw intense competition across most categories
  • Weaner steers and heifers lifted $80–$120/head on stronger feeder and restocker demand
  • Quality young cattle were keenly sought after by buyers
  • Macksville recorded a significantly stronger market following widespread rainfall
  • Angus steers topped 640.2c/kg, while Angus heifers reached 508.2c/kg

VIC (Bairnsdale Store Sale) also performed strongly:

  • Good-quality heavy yearlings attracted strong local and feedlot competition
  • Most categories lifted 40–60c/kg, equivalent to gains of $150–$300/head
  • Demand remained consistent across feeder and restocker lines

Summary: Store cattle markets remain firmly supported by improving seasonal conditions, strong feeder demand and active restocker competition. Weaners, yearlings and quality Angus cattle posted significant gains, with buyers showing increased confidence and paying premiums for well-bred, productive cattle. The market continues to reward quality stock, particularly those suited to feeder and breeding programs.
