Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep and lamb markets were mixed across Australia, with strong buyer demand supporting quality trade and heavy lambs in several centres, while increased supply and softer competition weighed on prices in others.

The trends appear to be:

  • Trade and heavy lambs remained well supported where quality was good
  • Increased yardings led to softer prices in some NSW markets
  • Mutton markets were mixed, ranging from significant gains to softer sales
  • Buyer demand remained strongest for quality lambs
  • Sheep supplies continued to tighten in several regions

Queensland

  • Warwick (713 lambs, 331 sheep) – Similar yarding and tight sheep supply generated strong competition, lifting store and trade lambs by $23–$45/head while sheep also sold dearer.

Summary: Queensland recorded another strong sale, with limited supply supporting significant gains for both lambs and sheep.

New South Wales

  • Carcoar (4,500 lambs, 1,500 sheep) – Increased lamb and mutton numbers resulted in generally softer prices, with trade lambs easing most while heavy lambs remained largely firm. An additional market report was available from RLX.
  • Cowra (2,300 lambs, 250 sheep) – Steady lamb numbers and fewer sheep produced slightly cheaper prices, with heavy lambs and ewes easing.
  • Yass (4,626 lambs, 2,400 sheep) – Improved quality lifted trade and heavy lamb prices, while store lambs and mutton sold cheaper. An additional market report was available from Elders.

Summary: NSW markets were mixed, with stronger quality supporting trade and heavy lambs at Yass, while increased supply and softer buying pressure resulted in easier prices at Carcoar and Cowra.

Victoria

  • Hamilton (5,000 lambs, 1,500 sheep) – Reduced yardings and strong buyer demand lifted most lamb categories by $10–$20/head, while mutton improved by up to $50/head.
  • Horsham (600 lambs, 200 sheep) – MLA market report was available.

Summary: Victoria recorded another firm to dearer market, with reduced supply supporting broad price gains across lamb and mutton categories.

Western Australia

  • Katanning (5,849 lambs, 2,167 sheep) – Lower yarding saw mutton prices firm to stronger, trade lambs remain firm and heavy lambs ease slightly despite strong demand for quality stock.
  • Fremantle – AWN wool market report was available.

Summary: WA markets remained generally firm, with lower supplies supporting mutton values while quality lambs continued to attract solid competition.

National Summary

Australian sheep and lamb markets delivered mixed results, with reduced supply and strong competition supporting prices in several regions, while increased yardings and selective buying led to softer outcomes in parts of New South Wales. Quality remained the key driver of price performance.
