by | Aug 6, 2026 | Saleyards, Sheep, Sheep Market Summary

Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep and lamb markets generally eased as softer buyer competition and mixed-quality offerings pressured prices, although quality lambs and lighter categories remained well supported in some centres.

The trends appear to be:

  • Lamb prices were mostly $5–$25/head cheaper across eastern markets.
  • Mutton prices generally eased amid softer processor demand.
  • Better-quality and lighter lambs continued to attract solid competition.
  • National lamb numbers increased while sheep yardings declined.

Queensland

  • Warwick sheep yarded 964 lambs and 639 sheep, with weaker buyer competition resulting in easier trade and store lambs and mutton, while hoggets improved.

Summary: Queensland markets eased slightly as buyer competition softened.

New South Wales

  • Carcoar sheep yarded 6,120 lambs and 1,640 sheep, with larger, better-quality yardings selling $5–$10/head cheaper for lambs and around $10/head lower for mutton.
  • Cowra sheep yarded 3,130 lambs and 580 sheep, with softer competition pushing lambs $5–$11/head lower and mutton $10–$20/head cheaper.
  • Yass sheep yarded 5,660 lambs and 3,500 sheep, with lambs easing $20–$25/head and mutton falling $20–$30/head.
  • Additional agency reports were available from Forbes and Carcoar.

Summary: NSW markets were generally cheaper as softer competition weighed on both lamb and sheep prices.

Victoria

  • Hamilton sheep yarded 2,400 lambs and 820 sheep.
  • An additional agency report was available from Shepparton.

Summary: Victorian markets remained relatively steady on modest yardings.

Western Australia

  • Katanning sheep yarded 6,884 lambs and 2,770 sheep, with light lambs improving, trade and heavy lambs holding firm, and mutton easing on softer quality.

Summary: WA markets were mixed, with firm demand for quality lambs offsetting easier mutton prices.

National Summary

Australian sheep and lamb markets were mostly softer as buyer competition eased, with lamb prices generally lower across the eastern states while quality and lighter lambs remained well supported.
