Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep and lamb markets showed mixed trends nationally, with stronger results in southern centres driven by quality and competition, while increased supply and store lamb pressure weighed on prices in parts of NSW and QLD. The trends appear to be:

  • Supply increased across most regions, particularly lambs
  • Strong demand for quality trade and heavy lambs in southern markets
  • Store and lighter lambs under pressure in northern regions
  • Mutton mixed, with heavier ewes holding firm while lighter types eased
  • Market remains quality-driven, with regional variation in price trends

East Coast (NSW, VIC)

  • Mixed market overall, with clear regional and weight-based differences
  • QLD (Warwick) saw:
    • Increased store lamb supply driving prices lower
    • Trade lambs eased, while mutton remained mostly stable
  • NSW results were mixed:
    • Cowra (2,900 lambs / 550 sheep) saw a variable market, with trade lambs slightly dearer but heavy lambs and mutton easing
    • Yass (7,290 lambs / 5,390 sheep) recorded stronger demand for restocker and trade lambs, while heavy lambs and hoggets eased
    • Carcoar (6,990 lambs / 1,980 sheep) saw firm to dearer trade lambs, with heavy lambs easing and mutton mostly steady
  • VIC (Horsham, Hamilton) stood out:
    • Horsham (7,850 lambs / 1,600 sheep) saw excellent quality drive significantly dearer trade and heavy lambs, including record prices for extra heavy lambs
    • Hamilton (13,200 lambs / 5,200 sheep) contributed to solid overall supply, with market activity supported by quality

Summary: Northern markets are under pressure from increased store supply, while southern centres are benefiting from strong demand for quality lambs, creating a clear regional split
