Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep and lamb markets showed mixed trends nationally, with large yardings creating price pressure in some centres, while strong competition for quality stock drove gains in others—highlighting a clear split between quality and secondary lines. The trends appear to be:

  • Supply surged significantly across all states
  • Quality lambs attracted strong competition and price gains
  • Plainer and secondary lambs showed mixed to easier trends
  • Mutton mixed, with strong demand in some regions and softer results in others
  • Market highly variable, with quality and competition key drivers

 

East Coast (NSW, VIC)

  • Mixed market overall, with strong divergence between centres
  • NSW results were softer:
    • Forbes (36,150 lambs / 10,900 sheep) saw a large yarding with overall easier lamb and mutton prices, despite solid competition for plainer lambs
    • Other centres reported limited data but ongoing market activity
  • VIC (Ballarat) stood out:
    • Ballarat (25,390 lambs / 5,636 sheep) saw strong, quality-driven gains across most categories
    • Heavy export lambs led price rises in a firm to dearer market

Summary: Large supply is weighing on prices in NSW, while strong competition for quality lambs is driving gains in VIC

 

South Australia

  • Naracoorte (5,505 lambs / 3,155 sheep) saw:
    • Firm to dearer market with strong buyer competition
    • Standout dispersal supporting ewe prices
  • Dublin (8,800 lambs / 1,200 sheep) saw:
    • Very good quality yarding
    • Strong competition driving a mostly positive market, particularly for heavy lambs and mutton

Summary: Firm to stronger market, supported by quality and strong buyer demand

Tasmania

  • Powranna (2,528 lambs / 1,701 sheep) saw:
    • Lamb prices ease, especially trade and heavy weights
    • Very strong mutton market

Summary: Softer lamb market but strong mutton demand supporting sheep prices

Western Australia

  • Muchea (11,350 lambs / 3,606 sheep) saw:
    • Firm to dearer lamb prices, particularly heavy weights
    • Mixed mutton trends, with lighter types easing and heavy ewes steady

Summary: Generally firm market, with strength in heavy lambs and mixed mutton results
