Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep markets were generally firm to stronger despite sharply larger yardings, with improved lamb quality and strong buyer support lifting prices in NSW, while increased sheep supplies met softer mutton demand.

The trends appear to be:

  • Larger yardings significantly increased lamb and sheep supplies.
  • Improved lamb quality and strong buyer competition supported prices at Tamworth and Dubbo.
  • Trade lambs were softer at Dubbo, while heavy and restocker lambs strengthened.
  • Increased sheep numbers resulted in softer mutton at some NSW markets.

New South Wales

  • Corowa yarded 4,635 lambs and 2,945 sheep, with mixed quality and softer competition, although the overall lamb market finished firm and mutton was unchanged.
  • Tamworth yarded 2,420 lambs and 1,300 sheep, with improved lamb quality and strong buyer support producing a mostly dearer lamb market, while sheep eased.
  • Dubbo yarded 22,500 lambs and 7,800 sheep, with trade lambs easing while heavy and restocker lambs strengthened and mutton gained $8–$15/head.

Summary: NSW markets were generally firm to stronger for quality lambs, although increased sheep supplies created softer conditions for mutton.

Victoria

  • Bendigo yarded 11,630 lambs and 4,400 sheep, with substantially larger supplies across both categories.

Summary: Victorian yardings increased sharply, with Bendigo supplying significantly more lambs and sheep to the market.
