Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep markets were broadly stronger, with increased NSW yardings meeting strong competition and lifting lamb and mutton prices, while smaller yardings in Queensland and WA also produced generally firmer results.

The trends appear to be:

  • Strong competition lifted lamb and mutton prices across NSW.
  • New-season lambs were generally dearer, with the strongest gains at Yass and Carcoar.
  • Victorian markets remained firm to dearer, with sheep and supplementary-fed lambs strengthening.
  • Reduced yardings at Warwick and Katanning still supported stronger values in several categories.
  • National yardings increased by 7,936 head, driven by higher lamb and sheep numbers.

Queensland

  • Warwick yarded just 407 lambs and 196 sheep, with sucker and processor lambs dearer and heavy ewes stronger, while store lambs eased.

Summary: Queensland markets were mixed, with reduced supply supporting stronger prices for processor lambs and heavy ewes.

New South Wales

  • Carcoar yarded 3,250 lambs and 2,600 sheep, with strong competition lifting new-season trade lambs $10–$12/head and heavy ewes $2/head.
  • Yass yarded 5,374 lambs and 3,000 sheep, with old trade lambs up $20/head and trade sheep $20–$25/head dearer.
  • Cowra yarded 4,960 lambs and 1,900 sheep, with new-season lambs up $3–$8/head and heavy mutton gaining $15–$20/head.

Summary: NSW markets strengthened strongly, with better-quality lambs and mutton attracting solid competition and significant price gains.

Victoria

  • Hamilton was fully firm to dearer, with supplementary-fed lambs lifting up to $20/head, sheep up $20–$25/head and heavy lambs topping at $390/head.
  • GVLX Shepparton and Southern Wool Report updates were available, but no current yarding or price trend was provided.

Summary: Victorian markets were generally stronger, led by gains in supplementary-fed lambs and sheep at Hamilton.

South Australia

  • Dublin yarded 4,000 lambs and 800 sheep, with slightly dearer demand and strong competition for quality lambs; extreme heavy lambs topped at $450/head.

Summary: South Australian markets were slightly firmer, with strong demand for quality and heavy lambs.

Western Australia

  • Katanning yarded 2,593 lambs and 2,262 sheep, with lamb and mutton prices recovering across all categories as demand strengthened for quality heavy lambs and ewes.

Summary: WA markets recovered, with strong demand supporting both lamb and mutton values despite lower lamb numbers.

National Summary

Australian sheep markets were generally firmer, led by strong competition in NSW and improved values across Victoria and Western Australia. National yardings rose by 7,936 head, with lambs increasing by 4,199 and sheep by 3,737.
