Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep markets showed mixed trends nationally, with reduced supply in several regions supporting trade and heavy lamb prices, while lighter lambs and some mutton categories remained under pressure amid mixed quality and seasonal conditions.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply lower across most regions, particularly in NSW and WA
  • Trade and heavy lambs generally firm to dearer under solid competition
  • Lighter and store lambs mixed to softer, especially where quality was plainer
  • Mutton variable, often easing but holding firmer in select centres
  • Buyer demand steady to selective, depending on quality and weight
  • Market remains quality-driven, with stronger competition for well-finished lambs

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

  • Mixed market overall, with stronger demand for trade and heavy lambs, while lighter categories and mutton show more variable trends
  • QLD (Warwick) saw:
    • Slightly lower lamb numbers with steady sheep supply
    • Stronger prices for young lambs
    • Heavier mutton and hoggets easing under dry conditions
  • NSW results were mixed to firm:
    • Cowra (3,050 lambs, 600 sheep) saw firm to slightly dearer lamb prices under solid competition, while mutton eased
    • Carcoar (6,170 lambs, 2,400 sheep) recorded firm to slightly dearer trends across most categories, with mutton steady to marginally stronger
    • Yass (7,240 lambs, 5,000 sheep) saw lighter lambs ease while trade and heavy lambs strengthened, with mutton softer
  • VIC results were mixed:
    • Horsham (4,500 lambs, 1,650 sheep) and Hamilton (8,000 lambs, 4,200 sheep) reflected mixed conditions, with variable supply and demand across categories

Summary: Eastern states markets remain mixed, with reduced supply and steady demand supporting trade and heavy lambs, while lighter lambs and mutton categories remain more volatile

Western Australia

  • Katanning (5,525 lambs, 4,425 sheep) saw:
    • Reduced yarding with mixed quality
    • Lighter and store categories holding or improving
    • Heavy lambs and some ewe lines easing

Summary: Mixed market with softer heavy categories offset by improved demand for lighter and store stock
