Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep markets showed mixed trends nationally, with reduced lamb supply and variable quality creating stronger results in some centres, while increased sheep numbers and softer demand weighed on mutton and trade lamb categories.

The trends appear to be:

  • Lamb supply reduced overall, while sheep numbers increased
  • Heavy lambs generally stronger, supported by processor demand
  • Trade and restocker lambs mixed to softer in larger yardings
  • Mutton mostly softer, particularly where supply increased
  • Market remains quality and supply dependent, with variable buyer competition

East Coast (NSW, VIC)

  • Mixed market overall, with strength in heavy lambs offset by softer trade lambs and mutton in larger or mixed-quality yardings
  • NSW results were mixed:
    • Tamworth (3,900 lambs, 3,100 sheep) saw reduced numbers with a firm to improved lamb market, while sheep held mostly steady
    • Dubbo (16,500 lambs, 27,250 sheep) recorded a mixed market, with stronger heavy lambs but cheaper trade and restocker lambs, and softer mutton prices
    • Corowa (8,500 lambs, 3,200 sheep) saw increased supply lead to softer lamb prices despite active restocker demand, with mutton fluctuating below recent highs
  • VIC (Bendigo) saw:
    • Reduced yarding (5,500 lambs, 1,600 sheep)
    • Limited data on price trends, though lower numbers suggest tighter supply conditions

Summary: Eastern states markets remain mixed, with heavy lambs holding strength while increased sheep supply and mixed quality continue to pressure trade lambs and mutton
