Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary
Sheep and lamb markets were mixed to firm, with stronger mutton prices underpinning the market, while lamb results varied by weight category and quality across major NSW centres.
The trends appear to be:
- Mutton markets generally strengthened across most centres
- Heavy sheep mostly sold dearer, although extra-heavy mutton was mixed
- Lamb markets were mixed, with lighter lambs often outperforming heavier categories
- Improved quality supported prices in several markets
- Trade and heavy lambs faced some pressure in larger yardings
- Overall market remained well supported despite increased numbers
East Coast (NSW, VIC)
Overall mixed to firm market, with stronger sheep prices helping offset varied lamb results.
NSW results were mixed:
- Corowa (10,220 lambs, 2,570 sheep) recorded firm to dearer lamb prices, with heavy export lambs gaining up to $13/head, while heavy sheep improved and extra-heavy mutton eased
- Tamworth (2,100 lambs, 1,130 sheep) saw lamb prices ease slightly despite improved quality, while mutton remained strong
- Dubbo (16,402 lambs, 8,092 sheep) recorded stronger prices for lighter lambs, while trade and heavy lambs eased; sheep prices improved on a stronger mutton market
VIC (Bendigo) saw:
- Bendigo (10,190 lambs, 6,080 sheep) offered larger lamb and sheep numbers
- Market activity contributed to the overall increase in national throughput
Summary: Mutton markets provided the strongest support across the eastern states, while lamb markets were more selective, with lighter and well-finished lambs attracting stronger competition than some trade and heavy categories. Overall market conditions remained firm despite significantly larger yardings.
