Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep markets remained generally firm to dearer across the eastern states, with reduced yardings, tighter supplies and strong processor competition supporting lamb and mutton prices, while restocker demand was more selective in some regions.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply lower overall, with significant declines in NSW, VIC and WA yardings
  • Strong processor competition supporting trade, heavy and export lamb prices
  • Heavy lambs generally firm to dearer, with several centres recording gains of $20–$30/head
  • Mutton markets remained strong, with reduced sheep numbers underpinning prices
  • Restocker and feeder demand mixed, with some softer results for plainer lambs
  • Quality continued to influence outcomes, with well-finished lambs attracting premium competition

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

Overall firm to dearer market, driven by reduced supply and strong buyer demand.

QLD (Warwick) saw:

  • Lower supplies of suitable trade and heavy stock
  • Dearer prices across most lamb and sheep categories
  • Strong gains in heavier and wholesale lambs

NSW markets were mostly stronger:

  • Deniliquin recorded strong competition for quality lambs, with heavy lambs reaching $370/head
  • Carcoar saw trade and heavy lambs lift $20–$25/head, with mutton up $10–$20/head
  • Cowra reported gains of $20–$30/head for trade and heavy lambs
  • Yass was more mixed, with trade lambs firm, heavy lambs slightly dearer and mutton stronger, while feeder and restocker lambs eased

VIC remained firm:

  • Hamilton maintained solid demand despite lower sheep numbers
  • Horsham operated with a smaller yarding but continued to attract steady competition
  • Market conditions generally remained supportive for finished lambs and sheep

Summary: Reduced supply and strong processor demand continue to support lamb and mutton prices, with heavy and well-finished stock attracting the strongest competition while restocker demand remains more selective.

Western Australia

Katanning (10,114 head) saw:

  • Sharply reduced lamb and sheep numbers
  • Firm demand for both lambs and sheep
  • Trade and heavy lambs holding steady
  • Extra-heavy lambs selling to $341/head

Summary: WA markets remained resilient despite sharply lower supply, with firm demand maintaining lamb and sheep values across most categories.
