Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets were generally firm to dearer across the eastern states, with strong competition for quality feeder, trade and finished cattle offsetting softer trends in some secondary categories and cows.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply mixed, with larger yardings in parts of NSW but lower numbers in several Victorian centres
  • Strong demand for feeder cattle and quality finished stock
  • Restocker interest remained solid, particularly for yearling steers and lighter weaners
  • Trade and grain-fed cattle generally sold dearer
  • Cow markets mixed, ranging from stronger in VIC and QLD to easier in some NSW centres
  • Quality continued to drive results, with plainer cattle facing more selective competition

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

Overall firm to dearer market, supported by active buyer competition and solid demand for feeder and finished cattle.

QLD results were generally stronger:

  • Warwick recorded firm to dearer trends across most categories
  • Strong demand lifted bullocks, heavy cows, feeder steers and restocker yearling steers
  • Moreton reported firm to dearer prices despite a slightly easier cow market

NSW results were mixed to firm:

  • Gunnedah saw feeder steers dearer and heavy cows slightly stronger, while light heifers eased
  • Inverell recorded stronger demand for weaners and feeder steers, although most heifers and cows sold cheaper
  • Carcoar remained firm to dearer, supported by strong feeder and cow demand\
  • Scone delivered mixed results, with trade heifers performing well while calves, feeder heifers and heavy cows eased

VIC stood out with stronger competition:

  • Wodonga recorded a very strong market, led by grain-fed cattle and feeder heifers
  • Shepparton saw notable gains in finished cattle and cows
  • Koonwarra reported a generally dearer market, particularly for grain-fed trade cattle and cows

Summary: Quality cattle continue to attract strong competition across the eastern states, with feeder, trade and grain-fed stock leading the market. While some secondary categories and cows eased in parts of NSW, overall sentiment remains positive and most centres reported firm to dearer trends.
