Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets showed mixed to softer trends nationally, with large yardings and reduced buyer competition placing pressure on most categories, while quality cattle and select heavy or feeder lines continued to attract stronger demand.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply mixed, with very large yardings in NSW offset by smaller offerings in VIC and TAS
  • Buyer competition subdued in many centres, particularly impacting plainer cattle
  • Restocker and lighter cattle under pressure, with notable price declines
  • Feeder and heavy cattle mixed, with better-quality lines holding firmer
  • Cows variable, though often softer in larger yardings but occasionally firm to dearer in tighter supply
  • Market remains quality-driven, with clear premiums for well-finished and well-bred cattle

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

  • Mixed to softer market overall, with widespread price pressure in larger yardings, though quality cattle continue to perform better

  • QLD results were firm to mixed:

    • Charters Towers (2,345 head) saw strong buyer demand for a well-finished yarding, with firm bullocks and heifers and dearer cows and bulls
    • Other centres reported limited data, though overall trends suggest steady to firm outcomes where quality was present
  • NSW results were mostly softer:
    • Yass (956 head) saw sharp declines in lighter and underweight cattle, while heavy feeders held firm and cows sold firm to deare
    • Armidale (3,790 head) recorded mostly cheaper results, with cow prices falling significantly in a cow-heavy yarding
    • Dubbo (12,000 head) reported a record yarding, with widespread price declines—especially in restocker cattle—while only the best feeders held firm
  • VIC results were mixed:
    • Koonwarra (2,763 head) saw firm to dearer weaner and heavy steer prices in a high-quality yarding, while heifers eased under softer demand

Summary: Eastern states markets remain mixed, with large yardings and reduced competition weighing on prices, while quality cattle and select feeder lines continue to attract solid support

Tasmania

  • Powranna (2,053 head) saw:
    • A larger and more mixed yarding
    • Prices easing $50–$150 across most categories

Summary: Softer market conditions driven by mixed quality and increased supply

Western Australia

  • Mount Barker (990 head) saw:
    • Slightly higher numbers and good quality
    • Strong demand lifting most young cattle
    • Gains across heifers, lighter weaners, cows, and heavy bulls

Summary: Firm to stronger market supported by quality and active buyer demand
