Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep and lamb markets were mixed across Australia, with mutton markets generally strengthening while lamb prices varied by weight category and quality, particularly in larger eastern state yardings.

The trends appear to be:

  • Mutton markets were generally stronger across most centres
  • Heavy lambs mostly held firm, supported by processor demand
  • Trade and lighter lambs faced some price pressure in several markets
  • Well-finished lambs continued to attract the strongest competition
  • Sheep prices generally outperformed lambs
  • Quality remained a key factor influencing market performance

East Coast (NSW, VIC)

Overall mixed market, with stronger mutton values offsetting softer trends in some lamb categories.

NSW results were mixed:

  • Forbes (15,700 lambs, 7,000 sheep) saw heavy lambs hold firm, lighter trade lambs ease $10–$15/head, and mutton strengthen
  • Inverell (1,756 lambs, 1,419 sheep) recorded stronger medium and heavy lamb prices, while sheep sold to mixed trends with firmer ewe categories

VIC (Ballarat) saw:

  • Ballarat (17,375 lambs, 4,264 sheep) yarded larger, better-quality numbers, with lamb prices mostly firm to $8 easier and mutton values dearer
  • Demand remained strongest for well-finished lambs and sheep

Summary: Eastern state markets remained selective, with heavy and quality lambs generally holding value while mutton prices strengthened across most centres.

South Australia

Mixed to firm market.

  • Naracoorte (1,786 lambs, 488 sheep) recorded mostly firm to slightly easier lamb prices, while sheep and mutton values lifted
  • Dublin (3,900 lambs, 600 sheep) saw trade and heavy lambs ease slightly, while store lambs and mutton remained firmer

Summary: Mutton continued to outperform lambs, while lighter store lambs attracted solid support.

Tasmania

  • Lamb prices improve on stronger competition
  • Mutton values ease as buyer interest softened

Summary: A stronger lamb market offset softer sheep values.

  • Strong demand for heavy and extra-heavy lambs
  • Ram lambs topped at $378/head
  • Smaller yardings supported market performance
