Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets showed mostly firm to dearer trends nationally, with strong competition for quality feeder, backgrounder, and cow lines supporting prices across most regions, although lighter and secondary cattle remained more variable.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply mixed, with larger yardings in parts of QLD and VIC but lower numbers in several NSW centres
  • Strong feeder and backgrounder demand supporting quality young cattle
  • Heavy cows generally dearer across most states
  • Restocker demand selective, particularly for lighter and secondary stock
  • Quality continuing to drive buyer competition and premiums
  • Market mixed in places where quality was plainer or buyer activity softer

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

Mostly firm to dearer market overall, with widespread competition for quality feeder cattle, weaners, and cows

QLD results were generally stronger:

  • Roma store sale (5,666 head) saw:
    • Larger yarding with strong buyer competition
    • Feeder and backgrounder demand lifting prices
    • Yearling steers reaching 536c/kg
    • Bullocks selling to 428c/kg
  • Warwick (1,243 head) saw:
    • Prices lifting 5c–25c/kg across most categories
    • Strong competition for quality weaners and feeder cattle
    • Heavy cows selling dearer
  • Moreton (560 head) saw:
    • Stronger prices across most categories
    • Heavy ox, cows, pasture heifers, and weaners all improving
    • Scarce heavy feeders attracting strong competition

NSW results were mixed to firm:

  • Gunnedah (3,980 head) saw:
    • Mixed market conditions
    • Feeder steers and cows selling dearer
    • Light restocker cattle easing
    • Improved quality in prime heavy cattle
  • Inverell (2,575 head) saw:
    • Mostly dearer trends
    • Strong gains in cows and feeder steers
    • Medium background cattle well supported
    • Some lighter heifers easing
  • Scone (2,201 head) saw:
    • Stronger overall market
    • Sharp rises in cow values
    • Dearer feeder cattle
    • Softer trends for light heifer calves
  • Carcoar (3,601 head) saw:
    • Mostly weaker prices due to lower quality
    • Reduced buying activity
    • Cows and well-bred young cattle remaining firm to slightly dearer

VIC results were mixed to firm:

  • Wodonga (850 head) saw:
    • Mostly stronger prices
    • Heavy cows lifting up to 15c/kg
    • Solid competition for quality trade and export cattle
  • Shepparton (1,400 head) saw:
    • Mixed trends overall
    • Beef cows improving slightly
    • Dairy cows easing
    • Strong competition for quality vealers and yearlings
  • Koonwarra (1,922 head) saw:
    • Stronger demand for feeder steers and bullocks
    • Softer trends in lighter and dairy cattle
    • Quality-driven buying conditions

Summary: Eastern states cattle markets remained mostly firm to dearer, with strong competition for quality feeder cattle, backgrounders, and cows, while lighter and secondary stock experienced more selective demand.

South Australia

Naracoorte (490 head) saw:

  • Firm to slightly dearer market conditions
  • Strong feeder demand for quality steers
  • Steers reaching 508c/kg
  • Cow prices improving on the previous week

Summary: Firm market overall, supported by strong feeder competition and improved cow prices.

Tasmania

Powranna (102 head) saw:

  • Smaller yarding
  • Strong demand for cows
  • Firm yearling prices
  • Top steers reaching 426c/kg

Summary: Firm market conditions, with strong support for cows and quality yearlings despite reduced supply.

  • Roma store cattle report (MLA): Yarding: 5,666, (+902) Roma’s larger yarding saw stronger competition for quality cattle, with feeder and backgrounder demand pushing yearling steers to 536c/kg and bullocks to 428c/kg. Full report available here
