Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep and lamb markets were generally firm across Australia, with strong buyer competition supporting quality lambs and mutton in most centres, although some markets softened where buyer attendance was reduced or weather affected demand.

The trends appear to be:

  • Strong buyer competition supported quality trade and heavy lambs
  • Lamb markets were generally firm to dearer, with isolated softer sales
  • Mutton markets improved in many centres, although results remained mixed
  • Restocker and processor demand continued to underpin quality lines
  • Buyer competition remained selective where quality was mixed

New South Wales

  • Forbes (24,800 lambs, 6,200 sheep) – Numbers nearly doubled to 31,000 head, with strong buyer competition keeping lamb and mutton markets firm despite mixed quality. An additional market report was available from AWN.
  • Inverell (1,335 lambs, 585 sheep) – Quality heavy lambs sold into a much dearer market, with strong competition pushing prices to a top of $422/head. An additional market report was available from RLX.
  • Deniliquin (1,500 lambs, 550 sheep) – A small winter yarding sold cheaper due to wet weather and reduced buyer competition, with heavy sheep most affected.
  • Dubbo – C&H market report was available.
  • Tamworth – DC market report was available.

Summary: NSW produced a predominantly firm to dearer market, with Forbes and Inverell benefiting from strong buyer competition, while Deniliquin recorded softer results due to wet weather and reduced buying activity.

Victoria

  • Ballarat (8,533 lambs, 3,769 sheep) – MLA market report available, with additional reports from Elders and TBW.

Summary: Victoria’s activity centred on Ballarat, where multiple market reports were released across the sale.

South Australia

  • Dublin (3,000 lambs, 600 sheep) – Smaller yarding sold to steady competition, with Merino store lambs and heavy sheep posting gains while most other categories remained firm. An additional market report was available from Elders.
  • Naracoorte – Elders market report was available.

Summary: South Australia’s market remained steady, with heavy sheep and Merino store lambs recording the strongest improvements.

Tasmania

  • Powranna (1,137 lambs, 748 sheep) – Larger yardings saw trade lambs ease slightly, while strong restocker demand lifted light lambs and mutton prices improved by $30–$40/head. An additional market report was available from Nutrien.

Summary: Tasmania recorded a mixed but positive market, with strong restocker demand supporting lighter lambs and significantly improving mutton values.

Western Australia

  • Muchea (2,751 lambs, 1,527 sheep) – Reduced sheep and lamb numbers met strong processor and feeder demand, lifting prices across most categories despite mixed quality. An additional market report was available from Nutrien.

Summary: WA remained firm to dearer, with processor and feeder competition supporting most sheep and lamb categories.

National Summary

Sheep and lamb markets were generally firm nationwide, supported by active processor and restocker demand. Quality lambs attracted strong competition across most centres, while mutton markets also improved in many regions despite isolated softer sales caused by weather and reduced buyer participation.
