Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets were mostly firm across Australia, with quality feeder, store and young cattle continuing to attract strong competition. Better-bred cattle outperformed secondary types, while cow markets remained mixed depending on region and quality.

The trends appear to be:

  • Feeder and store cattle remained the standout performers nationally
  • Quality weaners and yearlings continued to attract strong premiums
  • Cow markets were mixed, with some centres easing while others held firm or improved
  • Well-bred cattle consistently outperformed secondary and plainer-quality lines
  • Southern store markets recorded some of the strongest gains of the week
  • Export cattle were generally firm, although some northern markets softened

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

Overall firm to dearer market, particularly for feeder, store and young cattle, while cow prices varied between centres.

QLD results were mixed:

  • Blackall (1,500 head) recorded softer results, with cow prices easing 15–20c/kg and young cattle selling to selective competition.
  • Charters Towers (2,873 head) saw most categories ease, with bullocks and heifers down around 10c/kg and heavy cows falling up to 25c/kg.

NSW markets were generally positive:

  • Armidale (735 head) recorded stronger feeder yearlings and cows lifting 5–8c/kg.
  • Yass (987 head) saw feeder and young cattle improve, while cows eased 15–20c/kg.
  • Dubbo (3,552 head) delivered mixed results, with quality cattle holding firm while secondary cattle sold cheaper.

VIC produced some of the strongest store market results:

  • Mortlake Store Sale (6,000 head) recorded very strong gains, with steers and heifers selling 20–60c/kg dearer and quality weaners attracting outstanding prices.
  • Koonwarra Store Sale (3,816 head) remained firm, with heavy feeder steers slightly dearer and quality weaners well supported.

Summary: Quality feeder, store and young cattle continued to lead the market across eastern Australia. Strong performances in the Victorian store markets highlighted ongoing confidence in well-bred cattle, while cow prices remained inconsistent and more dependent on quality and local conditions.

Tasmania

Very strong store cattle market.

  • Powranna Store Sale (1,085 head) recorded some of the strongest results nationally, with quality weaners and yearlings improving by $200–$300/head.

Summary: Well-bred young cattle attracted exceptional competition, resulting in substantial price gains across most store categories.

Western Australia

Mixed market with stronger young cattle and softer heavy cattle.

  • Mt Barker (1,229 head) saw weaner and yearling prices improve, while heavy cows and bulls eased around 10c/kg.

Summary: Young cattle remained well supported, although heavier processing categories lost some ground.
