Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets showed generally softer trends nationally, with mixed quality, reduced buyer competition, and variable supply placing pressure on most categories, while select well-finished and quality lines continued to attract support.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply mixed, with some increases in NSW and VIC but lower numbers in parts of QLD
  • Buyer demand subdued overall, with reduced competition impacting prices
  • Restocker and secondary cattle under pressure, particularly in plainer yardings
  • Feeder and trade cattle mixed, with better-quality lines holding firmer
  • Cows mostly softer, especially heavy and secondary types
  • Market remains quality-driven, with premiums for well-bred and finished cattle

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

  • Mostly softer market overall, with widespread easing across categories, though quality cattle continue to perform better

  • QLD results were mostly softer:

    • Dalby (8,213 head) saw an easier market across steers, heifers, and cows due to a large cow yarding
    • Charters Towers (2,471 head) recorded mostly softer results, with only select lightweight steers holding stronger demand
    • Gracemere (2,155 head) saw softer prices amid reduced buyer competition, though well-bred vealers and feeders sold strongly
  • NSW results were softer to mixed:
    • Casino (1,764 head) recorded a generally cheaper market, with most categories easing and only limited gains in feeder steers and bulls
    • Singleton (2,030 head) saw softer prices across most categories, particularly cows and heifers, while heavy steers held firmer
    • Moss Vale (2,603 head) experienced a cheaper market overall, with significant easing in cows and lighter stock while heavy cattle were steadier
    • Silverdale (613 head) was mixed, with firm store cows and feeder heifers, stronger weaners, and slight easing in heavy feeder steers
  • VIC results were generally softer:
    • Bairnsdale (326 head) saw a softer market due to poorer quality, with most categories easing
    • Ballarat (354 head) recorded significant price declines across most categories in a plainer quality yarding
    • Echuca (976 head) saw a tougher market, with most categories easing sharply and only top-quality cattle holding firm

Summary: Widespread softer conditions persist across the east coast, with reduced competition and mixed quality weighing on prices, while better-quality cattle continue to attract selective demand
