Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary
Cattle markets were mixed across Australia, with strong competition supporting weaners, feeder cattle and quality store stock, while mixed-quality offerings and softer cow markets limited gains in some centres.
The trends appear to be:
- Strong buyer demand continued for weaners and feeder cattle
- Store cattle markets remained well supported following recent rain
- Mixed-quality yardings produced variable results
- Cow prices were generally softer in several markets
- Quality remained the key driver of competition
Queensland
- Blackall (969 head) – A much smaller, mixed-quality yarding met quality-related competition, with all regular buyers active and prices generally reflecting cattle condition across the predominantly cow offering. An additional market report was available from Elders (Gracemere).
Summary: Queensland activity was limited, with Blackall’s smaller, mixed-quality yarding producing quality-driven results while buyer competition remained steady.
New South Wales
- Armidale (670 head) – Improved quality and strong buyer competition lifted prices across most categories, particularly weaner and feeder cattle. An additional market report was available from APL.
- Yass (760 head) – Similar numbers and good quality saw stronger demand for weaners, feeder heifers, grown cattle and PTIC cows, while feeder steers were mostly firm to slightly easier.
- Dubbo (1,222 head) – Rain reduced yardings, with stronger demand for restocker and grown cattle offset by softer feeder cattle and significantly cheaper cows.
- Dubbo Store (593 head) – Good-quality cattle and widespread buyer support following recent rain delivered strong demand for weaners, PTIC cows and cow-and-calf units.
- Singleton – BP&L market report was available.
Summary: NSW markets remained well supported by strong restocker and feeder demand, particularly for quality weaners and store cattle, although feeder cattle and cows were softer in parts of the state.
Victoria
- Koonwarra Store (3,166 head) – Smaller numbers and strong local competition lifted the market, with lightweights gaining up to $50/head and feeder demand supporting slightly dearer heavy cattle. An additional market report was available from RLX.
- Mortlake Store (2,284 head) – Better-quality yarding and strong competition lifted crossbred cattle prices, while Angus results were mixed depending on quality.
- Wodonga Store – RLX market report was available.
- Colac – CSAA market report was available.
Summary: Victorian store markets remained strong, with quality cattle attracting solid local and feeder demand despite lower yardings.
Western Australia
- Mount Barker (570 head) – Reduced numbers and active feeder demand lifted weaner and yearling cattle, while heavy processing cattle held firm, cows eased and bulls improved. An additional market report was available from Elders.
Summary: WA markets remained generally firm, supported by active feeder demand despite lower yardings.
National Summary
Australian cattle markets remained mixed, with strong competition for quality weaners, feeder cattle and store stock supporting prices, while mixed-quality yardings and softer cow markets tempered results in several selling centres.
