Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary
Sheep and lamb markets were generally firm to dearer across most states, with widespread rain sharply reducing yardings and stronger processor and feeder competition supporting quality lamb and mutton prices.
The trends appear to be:
- Supply significantly lower overall, particularly across NSW due to rain disruptions
- Strong buyer competition supporting quality trade and heavy lambs
- Lamb markets mostly firm to dearer, especially for grain-assisted and well-finished stock
- Mutton markets generally stronger, with solid demand for heavy sheep and wethers
- Restocker demand active for light and store lambs in several centres
- Mixed-quality yardings creating variable results in secondary lamb categories
East Coast (NSW, VIC, SA, TAS)
Overall firm to dearer market, with reduced supply and stronger competition underpinning prices across most categories
NSW markets showed widespread strength despite lower throughput:
- Forbes saw sharply reduced yardings but a dearer market overall, led by quality grain-assisted lambs and stronger mutton prices
- Deniliquin recorded mostly steady trends, with strong feeder demand for large runs of store lambs
- Inverell reported mixed lamb trends, with heavier lambs dearer while grown sheep eased slightly on selective buying
- Overall NSW throughput fell heavily as rain restricted supply across key selling centres
VIC markets remained firm to dearer:
- Ballarat saw lighter lamb and sheep numbers with stronger buyer competition lifting most lamb categories
- Mutton remained firm amid keen processor demand
SA markets were mixed:
- Naracoorte reported stronger demand for quality trade lambs and firm heavy sheep prices
- Dublin recorded easier lamb trends overall, particularly for heavy crossbred and Merino lambs, while mutton remained firm to slightly dearer
Tasmania:
- Powranna recorded larger yardings and strong restocker demand for light lambs
- Mutton prices improved a further $10–$15/head
Summary: Rain-affected lower supply and stronger buyer competition supported generally firmer sheep and lamb markets, with quality lambs and mutton attracting the strongest demand.
Western Australia
Muchea (11,962 head total) saw:
- Firm heavy lamb prices
- Stronger wether demand
- Generally steady sheep values despite larger mutton numbers
Summary: WA markets remained mostly steady to firm, supported by solid competition for heavy lambs and stronger demand for mutton categories.
