Previous Close Sheep Markets Summary

Sheep and lamb markets were generally firm to sharply dearer across the eastern states, with reduced lamb supplies and strong processor, feeder and butcher competition driving widespread price gains.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply lower overall, particularly for lambs across NSW and Victoria
  • Strong buyer competition from processors, feeders and butchers
  • Trade and heavy lambs mostly dearer across all major centres
  • Feeder demand particularly strong for well-finished and medium-weight lambs
  • Mutton markets generally firm to dearer despite mixed quality
  • Light store lambs more variable, especially in WA

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)
Overall firm to sharply dearer market, with lower supply and strong competition supporting most categories

QLD markets strengthened:

  • Warwick recorded sharply dearer trends across all lamb and sheep categories following rain-reduced yardings
  • Strong processor and butcher demand underpinned the market

NSW markets were strongly positive:

  • Carcoar saw trade and heavy lambs rise $6–$11/head on improved quality and strong competition
  • Cowra recorded stronger trade and heavy lamb prices, with firm mutton trends
  • Yass posted sharp price gains across all lamb weight ranges as lower supply and strong feeder demand intensified competition
  • Mutton prices also improved despite mixed quality offerings

VIC markets were mixed but generally firm:

  • Horsham operated with much smaller yardings
  • Hamilton saw increased lamb supply with continued solid processor demand
  • Overall competition remained supportive despite reduced sheep throughput

Summary: Reduced lamb supply and aggressive processor and feeder competition drove broadly dearer sheep and lamb markets, particularly for trade, heavy and feeder-suited lambs.

Western Australia
Katanning (18,196 head total) saw:

  • Firm sheep and lamb markets overall
  • Strong processor and feeder demand supporting most categories
  • Light store lambs easing slightly amid larger offerings

Summary: WA markets remained mostly firm, supported by strong processor and feeder competition despite some softer trends in lighter store lamb categories.
