Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets were generally firm to dearer across Australia, with strong feeder, restocker and processor demand supporting most categories despite some softer results in North Queensland.

The trends appear to be:

  • National yardings increased significantly, with larger offerings across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria
  • Feeder cattle continued to attract strong competition, particularly quality yearlings and heavy feeder steers
  • Restocker demand remained very active for weaners, vealers and lighter yearling cattle
  • Trade and finished cattle generally sold firm to dearer across most centres
  • Cow markets were mostly stronger, particularly in southern states and selected NSW centres
  • Quality remained a key driver, with well-bred cattle attracting premium competition
  • North Queensland markets were more selective, with lower-quality offerings contributing to easier trends

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

Overall firm to dearer market, supported by strong buyer competition from feeders, processors and restockers.

QLD results were mixed:

  • Dalby recorded strong gains across most categories despite a much larger yarding, with yearling heifers leading the rise and heavy cows selling dearer
  • Charters Towers reported easier trends as increased numbers and lower-quality cattle reduced competition, although heavyweight cattle held firm and heifers remained unchanged

NSW results were predominantly stronger:

  • Singleton saw strong demand for well-bred weaners and calves, with prices generally firmer
  • Casino recorded solid restocker demand for vealers and yearlings, while cows and heavy cattle held firm to slightly dearer levels
  • Moss Vale delivered one of the strongest results of the week, with feeder cattle, weaners and cows lifting 10–20c/kg
  • Silverdale reported firm export cattle prices and dearer feeder and weaner categories under strong buyer competition

VIC continued its positive momentum:

  • Echuca posted widespread gains of 10–20c/kg driven by strong feedlot and export demand
  • Bairnsdale saw stronger prices for quality trade cattle and heavy bulls, although cows eased on quality concerns

Southern States (SA & TAS)

Strong competition supported generally dearer markets across southern selling centres.

  • Naracoorte recorded firmer prices, led by heavy feeder steers and cows
  • Mt Gambier reported broad price gains across yearlings, grown cattle, cows and bulls
  • Mt Compass saw moderate improvements across most categories
  • Powranna’s small yarding met strong demand, with yearlings and cows both selling dearer

Summary: Strong buyer competition continues to underpin Australian cattle markets, with feeder cattle, weaners and quality finished stock driving most gains. While North Queensland markets softened due to quality and supply factors, most centres reported firm to dearer trends, supported by active restocker, feedlot and processor demand. National yardings lifted significantly, yet demand remained strong enough to absorb the increased supply.
