Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets showed generally firm to dearer trends nationally, with strong buyer competition for feeder cattle, cows, and quality finished stock supporting prices across most regions, although mixed quality continued to create selective results in some centres.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply mixed, with larger yardings in some southern centres and reduced numbers in parts of QLD
  • Feeder and export buyer competition remaining strong
  • Cows generally dearer, particularly heavy and well-finished types
  • Young cattle mixed, with quality-driven demand influencing prices
  • Selective buying evident where quality was plainer
  • Market conditions broadly firm across most categories

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

Firm to dearer market overall, supported by strong competition from feeders, processors, and exporters

QLD results were mostly stronger:

  • Dalby (6,765 head) saw:
    • Firm to dearer trends across most categories
    • Strong competition for feeder steers and heifers
    • Cow prices continuing to improve
    • Broad-based buyer support throughout the sale
  • Clermont (334 head) saw:
    • Strong competition across quality cattle
    • Prime bullocks lifting 40c/kg
    • Cows improving by 30c/kg
    • Limited store cattle supply keeping prices firm
  • Gracemere (1,445 head) saw:
    • Smaller yarding with mixed quality
    • Stronger prices for cows and grown cattle
    • Young cattle steady to softer depending on breed and quality
  • Charters Towers (1,421 head) saw:
    • Improved buyer competition across most categories
    • Prime yearlings, grown cattle, and heavy cows recording gains
    • Bullocks, heifers, cows, and bulls all selling dearer

NSW results were generally firm:

  • Casino (1,156 head) saw:
    • Dearer trends across most categories
    • Stronger competition for young cattle, cows, and bulls
    • Slight easing in grown heifers
  • Singleton (1,252 head) saw:
    • Smaller yarding with mixed trends
    • Strong demand for feeder steers and heavy cows
    • Medium steer calves easing slightly
  • Moss Vale (2,720 head) saw:
    • Larger yarding attracting strong export and feedlot competition
    • Yearlings and weaners selling dearer
    • Cows and heavy cattle also firmer overall

VIC results were more mixed:

  • Bairnsdale (335 head) saw:
    • Smaller yarding with limited quality
    • Cheaper market overall
    • Cow prices falling 10c–25c/kg
    • Better-finished grown cattle attracting stronger demand
  • Echuca (1,281 head) saw:
    • Increased yarding creating a selective market
    • Feeders stronger than processors
    • Trade cattle and cows mostly easier
    • Mixed quality and cautious buying limiting competition

Summary: Eastern states cattle markets remained mostly firm to dearer, driven by strong feeder and export competition, although mixed quality and selective buying created softer trends in some southern centres.

South Australia

Mount Gambier (406 head) saw:

  • Larger yarding with improved quality
  • Grown heifers and bulls selling dearer
  • Steers and heavy cows easing slightly

Mt Compass (577 head) saw:

  • Stronger competition for vealers and grown cattle
  • Heavy cows improving
  • Yearling steers easing on average quality

Summary: Mixed South Australian market conditions, with stronger demand for quality vealers, grown cattle, and cows offset by softer trends in some steer categories.

  • Moss Vale cattle report (MLA): Yarding: 2,720, (+919). A larger yarding with strong export and feedlot competition lifted prices for yearlings and weaners, while cows and heavy cattle also sold to a firmer trend overall. Full report available here.
