Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets were mixed across Australia, with strong competition supporting quality feeder, trade and young cattle, while cow markets remained variable and some northern centres recorded softer trends.

The trends appear to be:

  • Feeder and quality young cattle remained the strongest-performing categories
  • Export steers and bullocks were generally firm to dearer
  • Cow markets were mixed, with easing in several centres and gains in others
  • Buyer demand remained selective, favouring quality and better-conditioned cattle
  • Heavy bulls performed well in many markets
  • Northern Queensland markets were softer than southern regions

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

Overall mixed to firm market, with quality cattle continuing to attract the strongest competition.

QLD results were mixed:

  • Dalby (5,874 head) saw export steers and bullocks improve, feeder yearlings hold steady and heavy bulls continue to strengthen
  • Charters Towers (2,851 head) recorded declines of 25–40c/kg across most categories, although quality heavy steers and bullocks remained resilient
  • Gracemere (3,247 head) saw stronger bullock and plain cow prices, while best-conditioned cows and heavy bulls eased

NSW markets were mostly firm to dearer:

  • Singleton (1,269 head) recorded strong gains in light steers and heifers, while feeder cattle held mostly steady
  • Moss Vale (2,760 head) saw quality yearlings, feeders and restockers sell dearer, though cows eased
  • Casino (2,400 head) reported softer cow prices and generally steady to lower results for vealers and yearlings
  • Silverdale (404 head) saw largely unchanged trends, with export cattle firm and feeder steers steady

VIC produced mixed but generally positive results:

  • Ballarat (642 head) recorded stronger young cattle and grown steers, while heavy cows eased and bulls improved
  • Echuca (1,543 head) saw quality trade, feeder and restocker cattle remain firm to dearer, while cows softened
  • Bairnsdale (312 head) recorded dearer trade cattle and grown stock, firm cows and stronger bull prices

Summary: Quality feeder, trade and young cattle remained well supported across eastern Australia, while cow markets continued to vary between centres. Better-bred cattle consistently attracted stronger competition.

South Australia

Generally steady to firm market.

  • Mt Gambier (466 head) recorded mostly firm prices, with feeder demand underpinning the market
  • Mt Compass (450 head) saw prices remain largely steady, with strong competition for quality Angus cattle

Summary: A stable market with feeder demand supporting most categories and quality cattle continuing to attract premiums.
