Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets were mixed but generally firm to stronger, with strong demand supporting prime cattle, weaners and feeders in several markets, while larger store yardings and mixed quality pressured some Victorian cattle.

The trends appear to be:

  • Strong demand supported prime cattle, particularly bullocks, cows and heifers in Queensland.
  • Quality young cattle and weaners attracted solid competition in NSW and Victoria.
  • Larger store yardings resulted in softer prices for some Victorian steers and heifers.
  • Improved quality and feeder demand supported stronger prices in Western Australia.

Queensland

  • Blackall yarded 1,750 cattle, with bullocks firm to slightly dearer, prime cows mostly firm to slightly easier and grown heifers easing.
  • Charters Towers yarded 2,340 cattle, with prime cattle generally dearer as bullocks rose 30c/kg, heifers 10c and cows 15–20c, while bulls eased 20c.
  • Additional agency reports were available from Dalby, Gracemere, Roma, Murgon, Coolabunia and Emerald.

Summary: Queensland markets were generally firm to stronger, led by strong demand for prime cattle and cows.

New South Wales

  • Yass yarded 488 cattle, with weaners stronger while feeder and trade cattle were mostly softer and cows eased.
  • Dubbo yarded 2,400 cattle, with strong quality driving widespread gains across young and grown cattle, although cows eased despite renewed export competition.
  • An additional agency report was available from Dubbo.

Summary: NSW markets were mixed but generally positive, with strong quality supporting young and grown cattle while cows remained softer.

Victoria

  • Koonwarra Store yarded 1,297 cattle, with stronger local weaner competition and improved heifer demand lifting prices by up to $150/head.
  • Mortlake Store yarded 4,575 cattle, with the large predominantly Angus offering selling generally softer despite active local and interstate restocker competition.
  • An additional agency report was available from Colac.

Summary: Victorian store markets were mixed, with improving spring confidence supporting weaners and heifers but larger supplies weighing on Mortlake prices.

Western Australia

  • Mount Barker yarded 522 cattle, with improved quality and demand lifting feeder cattle 10–20c/kg and heavy cows and bulls by up to 40c/kg.

Summary: WA markets strengthened on improved quality and strong feeder and processor demand.

National Summary

Australian cattle markets were mixed but generally firm to stronger, with strong demand for prime and quality young cattle offsetting softer results from larger store yardings in Victoria.
