Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets were generally firm across the country, with strong buyer demand supporting feeder cattle, weaners and cows in many centres, while mixed-quality offerings produced selective results in some markets.

The trends appear to be:

  • Quality weaners and young cattle continued to attract strong competition
  • Mixed-quality yardings resulted in varied price trends

Queensland

  • Dalby (6,052 head) – A larger yarding met solid buyer demand, with feeder cattle and cows recording widespread price gains across most categories.
  • Gracemere (1,356 head) – Reduced numbers and mixed quality produced mixed results, with heavy cows slightly dearer while most other categories sold to selective demand. An additional market report was available from Elders.
  • Charters Towers (Prime: 1,823 head | Store: 2,789 head) – Prime cattle sold firm to dearer, supported by stronger cow demand, while the combined agents’ store sale saw stronger-quality steers and heifers sell into a competitive market, although lighter and out-of-spec heifers remained subdued.\
  • Murgon (1,453 head) – A full yarding sold to very strong competition, with solid demand across all categories led by weaner steers and heavy cattle.
  • Emerald – GDL released its latest cattle market report.

Summary: Queensland cattle markets remained well supported, with strong competition for feeders, weaners and quality cattle, while mixed-quality offerings produced selective results at some centres.

New South Wales

  • Singleton (701 head) – Reduced numbers and stronger buying lifted most young cattle prices, while yearling steers and cows remained largely firm.\
  • Casino (2,412 head) – A larger yarding sold to a generally dearer market, with strong gains for weaners and cows while heavy bulls eased.
  • Moss Vale (2,520 head) – Increased numbers met a mixed market, with stronger processor demand and dearer heifers and bulls offset by cheaper feeder steers, restockers and heavy cows.
  • Scone – DC released its latest cattle market report.
    Gunnedah – DC released its latest cattle market report.

Summary: NSW markets were mostly firm to dearer, supported by stronger processor and restocker demand, although feeder steers and heavy cows softened in some centres.

Victoria

  • Bairnsdale (294 head) – Reduced yardings produced mixed results, with stronger demand for finished trade cattle, firm grown stock, softer heavy cows and dearer heavy bulls. An additional market report was available from BW.
  • Echuca (814 head) – A smaller yarding lifted quality trade cattle prices, while plainer export cattle and cows sold softer. An additional market report was available from Elders.

Summary: Victorian markets were mixed, with quality trade cattle attracting stronger competition while export cattle and cows remained under pressure.

South Australia

  • Mt Gambier (409 head) – A smaller, good-quality yarding sold to cheaper rates overall, with feeder and grown cattle easing while heavy cows remained mostly firm.
  • Mt Compass (337 head) – Reduced numbers and mixed quality resulted in a mostly firm to slightly easier market, with Angus yearlings topping the sale.

Summary: South Australian markets eased overall, although heavy cows remained firm and quality Angus yearlings continued to attract strong interest.

National Summary

Australian cattle markets remained generally firm, with strong buyer demand supporting feeder cattle, weaners and quality young stock, while mixed-quality offerings continued to produce varied results across processing categories.
