Previous Close Cattle Markets Summary

Cattle markets showed mixed trends nationally, with variable supply and quality influencing outcomes, while strong demand for well-bred and finished cattle supported prices in some centres, and cows and plainer stock remained under pressure.

The trends appear to be:

  • Supply mixed, with increased yardings in some QLD centres but reduced numbers elsewhere
  • Restocker and feeder demand selective, supporting quality young cattle
  • Feeder and trade cattle mixed, with stronger results for well-finished lines
  • Cows variable, often easing despite solid competition
  • Plainer and secondary cattle under pressure due to quality and seasonal conditions
  • Market remains quality-driven, with premiums for well-bred and finished stock

East Coast (QLD, NSW, VIC)

  • Mixed market overall, with stronger demand for quality cattle and ongoing pressure on secondary and cow categories

  • QLD results were mixed:

    • Dalby (6,905 head) saw mixed trends, with feeder steers and cows holding firm, heifers easing, and export bullocks selling dearer
    • Charters Towers (~2,190 head) recorded softer prime categories overall, though restocker demand lifted young cattle and cows improved later in the sale
    • Gracemere (2,856 head) saw increased supply with mixed quality, where well-bred cattle held premiums but cow prices continued to ease
    • Clermont (651 head) reported strong demand for well-finished cattle, with firm to high prices, while plainer types faced limited competition
  • NSW results were mixed:
    • Casino (614 head) saw strong price lifts, particularly for weaners and cows, despite mixed feeder trends
    • Singleton (1,407 head) recorded strong gains in weaners, while yearling steers eased and cows improved
    • Moss Vale (2,347 head) saw a cheaper market across all categories due to plainer quality
    • Silverdale (509 head) remained mostly steady, with minor easing in some steer categories and firm feeder heifers
  • VIC results were firm to stronger:
    • Bairnsdale (199 head) saw mostly firm young cattle prices, with cows improving slightly
    • Echuca (850 head) recorded improved demand, with most categories lifting 5–15c/kg, led by stronger young cattle and firmer cow prices

Summary: Eastern states markets remain mixed, with strong demand for quality cattle supporting prices, while cows and secondary lines continue to face pressure

South Australia

  • Mt Gambier (192 head) saw mixed results with limited buyer activity, though heavy cows lifted slightly

  • Mt Compass (533 head) recorded mostly firm results, with improved yearling prices and softer cow values

Summary: Mixed to steady market, with improved demand for yearlings offset by softer cow trends
